The Grange at Northington
Set in the heart of the Hampshire countryside, overlooking the rolling hills and open water of a beautiful lake, sits this epic English Heritage property. The Grange is the foremost example in England of Greek Revival architecture despite originally being a brick based mansion in the early 1600s. It wasn't until the 19th Century that the resplendent facade was reimagined by architect William Wilkens. Rumour has it, the owner hated Wilken's finished work and so sold The Grange to their neighbour, The Barings.
The Baring family added and removed wings, conservatories and ballrooms left right and centre - they even used the estate as a farm (pretty glam farm!). For a period of time it also housed the army as a base during World War One and at one point it was owned by the Prince of Wales as a hunting lodge. It wasn't until 1975, when the property hadn't been lived in for some time, that the risk of demolition was on the cards. There was a public outcry at such a prospect which ended up saving the old building and it became part of English Heritage.
Now, The Grange is famous for it's annual Opera festival (there is a theatre on site!) and hosts twelve weddings a year. It has also played host to some acting greats and was the backdrop to an etherial short directed by Baz Luhrmann. All is not as it seems at The Grange; the rich history and stories will be on display for your imagination to run wild. We look forward to adding a little bit of our own history to the building with you in September.
